Sandeep Johri (Mech ‘83) will host an informal Fireside Chat with Dr. Haresh Shah whose work related to seismic building codes became the de facto standard world wide. Join us as Professor Shah walks down memory lane and shares interesting stories from his accomplished journey after graduating from COEP almost 60 years ago! In addition to his accomplishments, he also founded the COEP alumni foundation in the US almost 10 years ago.
Dr. Shah received his Bachelor of Engineering degree from COEP in 1959 and degrees of MS and Doctor of Philosophy from Stanford University in 1960 and 1963 respectively. Professor Shah is a pioneer in the fields of risk analysis, earthquake engineering, and probabilistic methods for over 35 years. He has served at Stanford University in many capacities, including Chairman of the Department of Civil Engineering and Founding Director of the John A. Blume Earthquake Engineering Center. Professor Shah is Obayashi Professor of Engineering (Emeritus) at Stanford University, and also the Founder and Senior Advisor of Risk Management Solutions, Inc., a major provider of risk management solutions. He is also Founding Director and Chairman of World Seismic Safety Initiative. In addition, he is an honorary member of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute of United States and International Association of Earthquake Engineering. Professor Shah has received numerous awards over the years such as The John S. Bickley Gold Medal for Excellence Award in International Insurance Society for his sustained and outstanding contributions to the insurance industry; “Bharat Gaurav” award by the India International Friendship Society (IIFS).
